I'm never one to turn down a good cheese burger...or the opportunity to visit my favorite area in downtown Macon--Second Street. After looking at Ocmulgee's menu online, I felt comfortable enough to try them out for myself!
I didn't regret it. The first time I went was during the lunch rush on a Saturday. I grabbed a menu after walking inside and scoured it as I approached the register. The "Build It" burger caught my eye so I ordered it. Needless to say, I've returned many times since that day.
The more I ate there, the more I bragged about them to my friends and family. After months of convincing, Katie finally went there for the first time. Though she was concerned about how safe her food would be, she went and ordered a burger on a gluten-free bun. I remember her texting me afterwards to tell me how much she enjoyed her meal and she felt great afterwards. (Aka no cross-contamination with gluten.)
There are a couple things that make Ocmulgee unique. They have a wide range of burgers (they even participate in Burger Week) with fun southern options like their "Eat a Peach." Instead of carrying traditional name-brand sodas like Coca-Cola or Pepsi, they carry Main Root Soda with flavors like Mexicane cola, Lemon Lime, Blueberry, and Orange just to name a few. Their soda is non-GMO and lacks high fructose corn syrup. Not to mention...their sweet tea is a 10/10 on my scale (perfectly strong and sweet). While you're likely to spend more than $10 for a burger, the portion sizes are large and fries are always included! They have 4 different options for fries and a dozen dipping sauces to choose from. The possibilities are endless!
How do they handle allergies? They are more than willing to address any questions/concerns you have in regards to allergies. The fries are not cooked in peanut oil, so they're safe for those with peanut allergies to eat! (They're cooked in either canola or vegetable oil...it's been a hot minute since I've asked.) Gluten-free buns are available upon request and at an additional cost. In regards to nuts, their "Summer Salad" and "Pimento Cheese and Chicken Salad Sampler" contain candied pecans.
It's one of those restaurants you'll want to introduce all your friends to because it's just that addicting AND delicious. Next time you're in downtown Macon, you should stop by! Just be prepared for the best burgers and fries you've ever tasted.

Pro tip: Cut burger in half before consuming (trust me on this one).
