One of the many things I learned during quarantine is how willing I was to try new foods simply out of boredom! I was able to keep my snacking under control for the most part. After eating the same food for breakfast every day, I wanted to try something different.
I switched from working out in the afternoon and early evening to first thing in the morning! This meant the protein shake (just powder and water) I was having as a snack ended up becoming my breakfast. I felt unsatisfied and learned that the whey protein I was consuming did not sit well on my empty stomach.
I scoured the internet for protein smoothie recipes and became frustrated when I learned despite the fact I was searched for "nut-free protein smoothies," recipes with nut butter and nut milk came up as my search results. The few recipes I found included more ingredients than I wanted to include or had in my kitchen.
So, I decided to make my own recipe. How hard can it be?
I started off with a base recipe for a simple protein smoothie that I could work off of and the rest was experimentation until I found the perfect balance of liquid to solid ratio!
The end result has been my go-to breakfast for almost two months!
Fruity Protein Smoothie
(yields 1 hearty serving)
1 serving of pea protein powder
1 cup of oat milk (sub in any milk or like, or add water!)
4 ice cubes
6-8 strawberries (the more the merrier)
1/2 cup of blueberries
You can use as much or as little fruit as you like for your smoothie! I just prefer packing mine with fruit because it tastes amazing and keeps me full for hours!
1. Gather all of your ingredients together and let's get started! Start with measuring out and adding your oat milk (or milk of choice) to the blender jar.
2. Next, peel your banana, slice it up or break it in half and add to the jar!
You can use fresh or frozen strawberries if you want! After I rinsed mine, I pulled the stems off and added them! If you want to slice them you can, it saves time tossing them inside as they are!
3. Add blueberries
4. Add protein powder
5. Add ice cubes.
6. Add lid and secure.
7. Press your blender's "smoothie" setting or pulse until you are satisfied with the thickness.
8. Pour into your cup of choice and enjoy!
